Understanding swimming results

Plain-English explanations of the terms and codes shown in this meet centre.

The published result is the official result

This guide explains how to read it. Age-group, combined-final and additional-classification tables are helpful extra views; the original SPORTSYSTEMS table remains the official record.

Place

The swimmer's finishing position in that published table. A swimmer may have a different place in an overall table and an age-group table.

Entry

The seed time submitted when the swimmer entered. It may not be their most recent personal best.

Time & PB

Time is the official finish time. A PB is shown only when the result can be compared reliably with the published entry time.

Splits

Intermediate times recorded during a race. Split analysis is a coaching aid; the official finish time decides the result.

WA points

World Aquatics points compare performance quality across different events. A higher number is stronger; these are not medal points.

HDW

Heat Declared Winner. There is no separate final, so the heat results decide the placings and medals.

A Final / B Final

The A Final is the primary final and the B Final is a secondary final. Any combined summary follows the meet's configured rules and does not alter the official tables.

MC / Para

Multi-classification or disability-inclusive results may use classification points and can be ranked separately from open results.

DNS / DNC

DNS: did not start. DNC: did not compete or no completed result was published. Neither receives a placing.

DQ

Disqualified under the rule number printed beside DQ. The swimmer does not receive a placing, but the code explains which rule was reported.
